Before dedicating himself to ALS advocacy, Bill held the position of Chairman and CEO at NCR Corporation, a $6.5 billion technology company with a rich history dating back to 1884. Under his 13-year leadership, NCR transformed from a hardware-centric company to a leader in software and services, marking significant milestones like the spin-off of Teradata, relocating its headquarters, and executing strategic software acquisitions. Bill’s tenure at NCR, culminating in his retirement in 2018 due to his ALS diagnosis and subsequent appointment by the board of directors as Chairman Emeritus, reflects his innovative approach to business model evolution.
Prior to NCR, Bill was the CEO of Symbol Technologies, where he led a remarkable turnaround, significantly boosting revenue by 24% and returning the company to profitability. This achievement earned him the American Business Award for Best Turnaround Executive and a place in Fast Company’s Fast 50. Bill also made his mark at Cisco Systems, overseeing operations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America during his 10+-year tenure.
Bill’s influence extends beyond corporate leadership; he is a recognized voice in policy circles in Washington, D.C., advocating for tax reform, competitiveness, pension funding reform, and job preservation. His testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee and participation in the White House Forum on “Strategy for American Innovation” highlight his commitment to policy that supports American businesses and innovation.
Recognized by Time Magazine as a thought leader and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the ATM Industry Association, Bill’s visionary leadership has left an indelible mark on the technology sector. As a trustee of Long Island University, advisor to the Georgia Institute of Technology, and former board member of notable corporations like United Airlines, Coach Fashions, and Sprint, Bill leverages his extensive network and expertise in support of EverythingALS’s Vision 2030 mission.
Holding a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from Long Island University, Bill now resides in New York with his wife, Michele, and is a proud father. His journey from a technology visionary to an ALS advocate underscores a passionate commitment to finding a cure and supporting those affected by ALS.
